Field type

Also known as

Semantic type

What is a field type?

A field type, also known as a semantic type, is the meaning of a field (or column) in a table.

The field type determines how Metabase displays the field. For example, a column’s data type might be “text,” but its field type could be “URL”. Metabase would then display the column values as links.”

When you create or edit a model, you can select the field type for a column.

Admins can change field types globally on the Data Model page in the Admin Panel.
