What's the difference between Metabase and Looker Studio?

TL;DR If you’re using Looker Studio with Google Sheets or Google Analytics and feeling a little boxed in, Metabase could be your next step up. Both tools help you visualize data, but Metabase gives you more room to grow—especially when your questions (or your data) get more complex, or you just need more from your visualizations and dashboards.
Bring your Google Sheets into Metabase via our Cloud-hosted integration, and turn them into fully interactive dashboards with filters, drilldowns, and subscriptions.

A quick note on names. In April 2026, Google renamed Looker Studio back to Data Studio, the name it used before 2022. It's Google's free tool for quick, personal reporting, and it's a different product from Looker, their enterprise BI platform. It now also shares a name with Metabase Data Studio, which is where you curate your semantic layer in Metabase. Same words, different products. We use "Looker Studio" on this page because that's still what most people call it.

What makes Metabase a good choice compared to Looker Studio?

  • Easy for everyone to use. Click on column-headers to turn data into charts. Turn spreadsheets into interactive dashboards for tracking KPIs, spotting trends, and digging into what's going on.
  • Analyses on auto-pilot. Get drill-throughs out of the box—click on a chart or table row to instantly break down data by category, time range, or other filters.
  • Built-in AI, free for everyone. Ask questions in plain language and get answers, charts, and help writing SQL from Metabot, included in every Metabase edition, including the free open source one. Google keeps its AI features in Data Studio Pro, the paid tier.
  • Super fast to set up without any specialist skills. Try Metabase Cloud with built-in database storage.
  • Build production-grade dashboards and embed them into your product. Customizable, low-code embedded analytics that lets your customers explore their data with as much - or as little - flexibility as you want.
  • Help from our world-class Success team. Technical experts who help with everything from troubleshooting to advice on best practices.
  • A secure, shared workspace. Metabase is like a hub for your data where your team can self-serve insights, view and share reports, and create their own dashboards without the help of a data team. We prioritize privacy and security features to give secure data access within your org or users, like SSO and fine-grained permissions.
  • Open source, affordable, and scalable. Transparent pricing for startups through to advanced functionality and support for Enterprise. Grow into SQL databases - Metabase will scale with you.

When might Looker Studio be a better fit than Metabase?*

  • You have basic reporting needs and only need simple visualizations without too much customizability.
  • You don't need AI data exploration or functionality out of the box.
  • You don’t need a central place for teams to explore, collaborate on, and share data.
  • You're working primarily with Google Analytics or Google Ad data and just need some lightweight dashboards.
  • You want a direct integration with one of Looker Studio's partner connectors.
  • You need something free with no setup (Metabase open source edition is also free. For non-technical teams, Cloud-hosted implementation and maintenance with built-in storage is available on paid plans.)
  • You hang out exclusively in the Google Suite.

*For the record... If you’re using Looker Studio for shareable dashboards and lightweight reporting, you’ll feel right at home in Metabase - only with fewer limits, richer filtering, drill-throughs, and subscriptions so you can actually learn from your data, not wrestle with it. (We’re trying to be balanced here, but c’mon, it’s still our website 😏)

“It's the first time in my years working in data that I saw non-technical business users create their own dashboards and analytics in our BI platform, all made possible because of Metabase’s user friendly and intuitive data exploration and dashboarding capabilities.”

Frequently asked questions

When is Metabase a better choice than Looker Studio?
Chevron Blue

Metabase is best suited for businesses that need a straightforward way for everyone in the team to self-serve analytics without having to rely too heavily on your data team. It's BI that your team will actually enjoy using, at the right price for your scale. Bonus - dashboards that don’t make you sigh when you open them.

When is Looker Studio a better choice than Metabase?
Chevron Blue

Credit where it’s due — Looker Studio can be a solid choice if you're deep in the Google ecosystem and just need lightweight dashboards connected to Google Analytics or Ads. If your needs are pretty basic and you're mostly using Sheets or GA, it might do the job just fine.

Does Metabase have AI like Looker Studio (Data Studio)?
Chevron Blue

Yes, and it's available in all plans, include open source. Metabot lets anyone ask questions in plain language, summarize a chart or dashboard, and get help writing SQL. It's included in every Metabase edition, including the free open source one. Google's AI features are part of Data Studio Pro, its paid tier, so if you're on the free version of Data Studio today, AI means upgrading.

What kinds of teams switch from Looker Studio to Metabase?
Chevron Blue

Teams that want better interactivity, clearer visuals, and more room to grow. A lot of teams start with Looker Studio because it’s free and easy with Google products — but as they want drill-throughs, better filtering, or less clunky dashboards, they move to Metabase. Usually it’s operations, product, marketing, or HR teams looking to explore their data more freely.

Can Metabase do everything Looker Studio does?
Chevron Blue

Pretty much — and often with more flexibility and polish. Metabase connects to Google Sheets (via Cloud), lets you share dashboards externally, visualize KPIs, and even schedule dashboards to send automatically. Plus, when your data outgrows Sheets, Metabase is ready to scale with you.

What’s the difference in pricing between Metabase and Looker Studio?
Chevron Blue

Metabase offers an open source version that’s totally free to use, plus affordable cloud plans with built-in storage, sharing, and support. Looker Studio (renamed Data Studio in April 2026) is free too — though more advanced versions (Data Studio Pro, formerly Looker Studio Pro, or the full Looker product) may require a Google Cloud contract and come with additional cost per user or seat.

Do you need to know SQL to use Metabase or Looker Studio?
Chevron Blue

Nope! Both let technical folks use SQL, but Metabase makes it easier for everyone else. Its visual Query Builder lets you filter, group, and explore without writing a single line of code. If you love SQL, go wild — but if you don’t, that’s cool too.

How do Metabase and Looker Studio compare in terms of visualization capabilities?
Chevron Blue

Both tools let you build dashboards and charts — but Metabase gives you more to work with. You get richer filtering, drill-throughs, interactive dashboards, and prettier defaults. If Looker Studio feels a bit rigid or clunky, Metabase might feel like a breath of fresh air.

Can Metabase connect to Google Sheets like Looker Studio?
Chevron Blue

Yes! Metabase’s Cloud plans include built-in support for Google Sheets via Metabase Cloud Storage. Just link your sheet or Drive folder and Metabase keeps your data in sync — no ETL needed. You can slice, filter, and visualize Sheets just like any other table.

Ok, give it to me straight though — what’s the best Business Intelligence tool?
Chevron Blue

Honestly? It depends on what you need. But if you’re looking for something that’s powerful, super user-friendly, and grows with your team — Metabase checks a lot of boxes. We’re biased, sure, but you can try it free and see for yourself.

And if you’re comparing options, our Metabase Alternatives post lays out how we stack up against other BI tools.

Again, there’s no “right” answer, but just sayin’ — Metabase will let everyone on your team work with data, integrates with your preferred data tools, gets up and running in 5 minutes flat, and suits all budgets (and you can try it for free).
